Why did people want the king back in 1646?

The Civil War was over in 1646 and Charles I was defeated by Parliament. However, something puzzling happened in England. Even though Charles lost the war, most people wanted him back as king. Some were even prepared to let him rule in the same way as he had done before the war. Can sources from the time help to explain why?
