The Big Question - Who caused the Cold War?

8.45 pm The Great Debate: Who caused the Cold War?
What you have to do
You are being interviewed by a TV producer who wants someone to host the TV programme 'The Great Debate'. You have to convince the producer you are the right presenter. To do this you have to tell the producer what 3 questions you will ask each leader:

  • Truman
  • Stalin
  • Churchill (he was not the British leader in 1949 but he was still a very influential politician)
*

Stage 1: Preparation
You will not be able to ask good questions unless you research carefully. For example, if you ask Stalin 'Did you cause the Cold War?', he will just say no! However, if you ask him why he ordered the Eastern European states to refuse Marshall Aid he will have to give you a proper explanation.

  • So, use the case studies to draw up awkward questions for the three leaders.
  • Think how they might try and wriggle out of your question and how you will stop them doing this.
  • Remember that you may get ideas for questions from the case studies which are not directly focused on each leader.

Stage 2: Your questions
We suggest you come up with 5-6 questions to begin with and then choose the best 3. This table might help you. As well as your question, explain why you asked your question and what kind of response you are hoping to get. One question for Stalin is already shown.
